State-wide Expression of Interest for ecotourism facilities in national parks (now closed)

To communicate changes to the Nature Conservation Act 1992 (NC Act) that allow for ecotourism developments, a state-wide Expression of Interest (EOI) was released in 2013. The EOI called for suitable individuals and organisations to submit ideas for the development of ecotourism facilities on protected areas and adjacent State land.

The state-wide EOI closed 27 September 2013. A number of proposals are currently being investigated further.

The Queensland Government will continue working closely with proponents to ensure all approved ecotourism facilities are in the public interest, ecologically sustainable and, to the greatest possible extent, preserve the land’s natural condition and protect its cultural resources and natural values.

All proposals are confidential, governed by probity for this process and treated as commercial in confidence. The Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing (NPSR) does not release any details of proposals to parties not involved in the evaluation process.

Expression of Interest - Mamu Tropical Skywalk (now complete)

The EOI process for the commercial management of the renamed Mamu Tropical Skywalk (formerly Mamu Rainforest Canopy Walkway) closed 8 February 2013.

Commercial management arrangements have been finalised for the Mamu Tropical Skywalk and the first ecotourism lease has been issued under the new NC Act provisions. The new commercial operator commenced management of the attraction on 31 March 2014, bringing a wealth of successful tourism experience to the facility which will support visitation growth into the region south of Cairns.

Expression of Interest - Green Mountains, Lamington National Park (now closed)

The EOI process for redevelopment of the Green Mountains campground at Lamington National Park closed 29 November 2013.

Following assessment of EOI submissions recieved, one proponent was selected to proceed to the next stage of the process. The proponent is currently developing a detailed proposal reflecting the unique characteristics of Lamington National Park.

Currently all proposals are confidential as per strict probity rules for this process. At this stage, NPSR cannot release any details of these proposals to any parties not involved in the evaluation process.

Expression of Interest - Walkabout Creek Activity Centre, adjacent to D'Aguilar National Park (now closed)

The EOI process for the development of a Commercial Activity Centre at Walkabout Creek, adjacent to D'Aguilar National Park closed on 12 December 2014.

Following assessment of EOI submissions received, one proponent was selected to proceed to the next stage of the process. This proponent is currently developing a detailed proposal for further assessment by NPSR.

Currently all proposals are confidential as per strict probity rules for this process. At this stage, NPSR cannot release any details of these proposals to any parties not involved in the evaluation process.
