National park camping permit agents invited to apply

9 May 2017

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) is reminding local businesses interested in facilitating the sale of camping and vehicle access permits they have until 15 May to apply for a three-year agreement with two years’ possible extension.

Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing Deputy Director-General Wade Oestreich said QPWS currently had agreements with 24 agents providing over-the-counter service at 28 locations.

“These agreements are due to expire at the end of June 2017, so on 26 April, QPWS called for expressions of interest for businesses adjacent to national parks and State forest camping areas to provide this service for three years,” Mr Oestreich said.

“Agents don’t pay a fee to offer the service, but they do earn a commission for each permit issued, currently $2.50 a permit.

“In 2015–16 more than 367,000 camping and vehicle access permits were issued. Nearly 18 percent of those were issued by agents for QPWS.

“The number of permits issued, and the percentage issued by agents, have been trending upwards in this financial year.

“Most of the agents are in the south-east, mainly on the Sunshine and Fraser coasts. It would be nice to see a spread of agents across the state, but the main objective is to have the right agents at the right locations to give campers more flexibility to obtain permits.

“Over the past two years, the number of camping areas that can be booked – rather than registering when you get to a camping area – has increased. Phone coverage is not good in some remote areas. Having a local agent will help campers get their permits more easily,” Mr Oestreich said.

He said QPWS was looking for agents who could provide great customer service, in locations that captured the most visitor traffic, and who could serve customers in extended operating hours during peak periods.

Operators should also be able to provide access to various payment options, including cash, credit card and EFTPOS, and provide receipts to customers.

Current over-the-counter agents are invited to re-apply through this process.

The Request for Quote is open until 2pm on 15 May 2017. Successful applicants will be notified soon after it closes, and contracts will start from 1 July 2017.
