Keep Lake Eacham and Tinaroo beautiful on Australia Day

17 January 2017

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) is preparing to welcome Australia Day visitors to Lake Eacham in Crater Lakes National Park and to nearby Danbulla State Forest on the edge of Lake Tinaroo, and will work with Police to ensure a safe and festive time for all.

QPWS Principal Ranger Andrew Millerd said in recent years large numbers had flocked to the deep, cool Lake Eacham on 26 January, and Tinaroo was also popular.

“Australia Day is the time to celebrate what’s great about our country, including our beautiful natural areas,” Mr Millerd said.

“Most of our visitors understand that, are well behaved and look after the lakes.

“Unfortunately in the past we have also seen a high amount of anti-social and unsafe behaviour involving alcohol in, on and around the lakes.

“The increasing safety risks, as well as damage from a huge amount of litter such as discarded rafts and broken bottles left in and around beautiful Lake Eacham on past Australia Days, have prompted QPWS to take preventative action,” he said.

This Australia Day, rangers together with Queensland Police will be greeting visitors and ensuring safety around the Lake Eacham day-use area by:

  • addressing unsafe actions and directing persons who are within restricted access areas to leave
  • having zero tolerance for anti-social behaviour. Infringement notices and on-the-spot fines of $243 or more may be issued and subsequent directions to leave immediately, and
  • stopping visitors entering with dogs and other prohibited animals. Assistance dogs are permitted.

“We’ll have extra ranger patrols at our sites around Lake Tinaroo,” Mr Millerd said.“Lake Eacham is a natural gem and the pride of the Atherton Tableland. It’s part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and a major tourist attraction.

“Lake Tinaroo is also a magnet for locals and visitors to the Tableland.

“Let’s keep these places beautiful and natural, and encourage others to do likewise,” he said.
