Fitzroy Island's Nudey Beach track closed for upgrade through November

30 October 2015

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) is repairing and resurfacing Fitzroy Island National Park’s Nudey Beach track and will close the track from 4 to 30 November, with some closures of the Secret Garden track also necessary during the works.

QPWS Regional Director Great Barrier Reef Damien Head said Nudey Beach would only be accessible by boat in that time, and the track should reopen on Tuesday 1 December 2015.

"The Secret Garden Track will also be closed for short periods during the works to allow our contractor to get machinery through," Mr Head said.

"The island’s campground will be closed on Friday 6 November to allow helicopters to transport materials between the mainland, the island and the track.

"The Nudey Beach track has deteriorated over time and the works are to reinstate the drainage and resurface the track. It’s a $200,000 project.

"All the other tracks on Fitzroy Island will remain open–the Lighthouse Road and Summit track included–except for the occasional closures of the Secret Garden track.

"We know Nudey Beach is a very popular walk for Cairns locals and visitors, and we thank everyone for their patience," Mr Head said.
